What exactly is liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipo, liposculpture or lipectomy, is a cosmetic surgery to remove fat cells from the body. As a cosmetic surgery, the purpose of liposuction is fat removal to change a person’s physical appearance, rather than resolve medical problems such as obesity. It’s typically an invasive form of fat removal which involves cutting open the skin to remove the fat underneath, and like any surgery, involves an element of risk, and may leave scars.

3D liposuction is a new non-invasive fat removal process which has been around since only 2012 or 2013. 3d lipo is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about cosmetic treatments in Britain, having been repeatedly featured in OK Magazine, Woman’s Own, The Mirror newspaper, and many other publications. The 3D lipo fat removal technique has received a swathe of celebrity endorsements, from reality TV star Amy Childs, to entrepreneur Michelle Mone OBE (owner of fake tan company UTan and founder of lingerie company Ultimo), to Emmerdale and Holby City actress Patsy Kensit. Perhaps the most well-known celebrity connected to 3D lipo is Dr Leah Totton, winner of TV series The Apprentice in 2013, and co-owner of Dr Leah Clinic (with Lord Alan Sugar), where she offers a 3D lipo service.

3D lipo is actually performed using a machine called 3D Lipomed. The 3D lipo machine performs fat removal by destroying fat cells using a combination on non-invasive techniques, which means no going “under the knife” or beneath the skin, unlike traditional liposuction. 3D lipo techniques include fat freezing, ultrasound, radio frequency, and vacuum rolling, while 3D lipo applications include fat removal, skin tightening, cellulite reduction and body sculpting.

An increasing number of beauty salons, spas and cosmetic clinics are purchasing 3D lipo machines and offering fat removal sessions, apparently with impressive results. An early adopter of 3D liposuction technology was the Medispa S10 clinic in Sheffield. The aesthetic treatments company opened in Sheffield in 2013, offering a range of treatments including pain free laser hair removal and skin tightening. Medispa purchased their first 3D lipo machine in September 2014, and, due to increasing demand, recently purchased a second 3D lipo machine.

Typical prices include £120 for a 3D lipo fat removal (ultrasound), cellulite reduction or skin tightening session, or £350 for a 3D lipo fat removal (fat freezing) session, with a special offer on eight 3D liposuction courses (including one fat removal by freezing) for £800. If you happen to be in Sheffield or nearby, Medispa offer a free consultation to help determine whether 3D lipo fat removal is a suitable treatment for you.
